Dune Favorites

This was shot the afternoon we got to the overnight stay in the Sahara during a moderate sandstorm. I really like the way the blowing sand and soft contours make the picture almost dreamlike.

The sand textures and the scale of the patterns is different at the Great Sand Dunes National Monument from, for example, Death Valley. I didn't see anything that looked like this there. I like the suble patterns and sweep of this shot.

I have a passion for sand dunes and Stovepipe Wells dunes in Death Valley is my favorite place. There is something about the scale, both macro and micro, about these dunes and the sunrise and sunset light that makes them very photogenic. In this shot, I like the contrast between the line of the ridge and the soft patterns and colors that go off in the distance to the right and top, and the subtle pattern at the very top of the picture.
